Last week, we discussed on our blog how the stigma surrounding marijuana is often the road block between a person getting help for their medical condition and their relief.
We believe at West Virginia Marijuana Card that ending the stigma is one of the most important things we can tackle as a company. We go above and beyond being your go-to medical marijuana card provider and provide you with the information that you need to stay educated on all things medical marijuana.
Today, we will be diving into part two of our series in which we will debunk some of the most common misconceptions about marijuana. You deserve to know the truth and you deserve to know relief!
Debunked Myth #3: “People who use cannabis are lazy.”
There has been a long standing stereotype of the “pothead” or “stoner” based on how the media portrays marijuana use. It has been in countless films such as “Cheech & Chong” and “Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle.”
While these movies are meant to be comedies, they create a false narrative as to who marijuana users are. They stereotype users as being lazy, silly, and even just dumb when in reality marijuana users can be a whole plethora of things!
This stereotype overlooks the fact that sometimes patients need to relax. There are strains that contribute to the “couch lock” stereotype but some of our patients actually need that for their health and wellness. We have had patients that have chronic or intractable pain that only find relief with relaxing marijuana strains.
There also are strains, such as sativa strains, that make you feel motivated and energetic! These strains are great for daytime use and can treat those with depression, anxiety or PTSD.
Debunked Myth #4: “Using marijuana kills brain cells.”
This myth alludes to the misconception that marijuana users are “dumb” since they kill their brain cells by using marijuana. We know this is totally false! In fact marijuana consumers lie all over the intelligence spectrum, just like any other group of people.
We also know that there is no direct link between cannabis use and any negative effects on the brain!
This myth all started back in 2012 when a study showed a link between cannabis use and lower IQ over time for adolescents. This study was unfortunately replicated by other researchers afterwards spreading the myth even further.
A group of researchers were suspicious of this earlier study's findings so they took a deeper look at the methodology that they were using and found that they were making unsupported assumptions about marijuana’s role in IQ decline. The new study found that cannabis doesn’t cause a decline in IQ at all! Instead, genetic and environmental factors were completely ignored in the original study which both are leading contributions to lower IQ.
Debunked Myth #5: “People use medical marijuana to just get ‘high’ all the time.”
Many people who are against medical marijuana programs believe that medical cannabis is just a way for people to legally get “high” all the time. This myth ignores that marijuana is extremely beneficial and a great treatment option for those with serious medical conditions.
A recent study actually found that most people who consume marijuana are not looking to party but are just looking to find relief for their medical condition. This fact alone debunks this myth since it reveals that people are in a lot of pain and simply looking to find relief. Marijuana has healing properties that keep consumers coming back time and time again to treat their medical conditions such as cancer, HIV/AIDS, chronic pain, multiple sclerosis and more!
