5 Benefits of Having a Medical Marijuana Card

Medical marijuana is legal in the State of West Virginia, and thousands of patients are already able to access dispensaries to purchase their medicine. Marijuana is a natural, alternative medicine option that has been used for centuries but is becoming more popular each year.

37 states currently have medical cannabis programs in place and 21 states have legalized cannabis all together. Many states legalize recreational marijuana a few years after they introduce medical marijuana.

It is inevitable that marijuana will be fully legalized in West Virginia at some point. Many people think that when recreational marijuana becomes legal, they will no longer need their medical card.

Maybe you don’t need it necessarily, but there are countless benefits to having your medical card, even in a recreational state.

More Affordable Medicine

In recreational states, people can travel to dispensaries and purchase marijuana without a medical card if they are 21 and older and meet other requirements. However, you can save a considerable amount of cash if you have your medical card.

Recreational states charge additional retail taxes on marijuana for recreational use. This could be anywhere from 7-40% in taxes! When you consider how expensive marijuana already is, paying an extra high tax is not desirable, to say the least.

Medical patients are exempt from paying these extra taxes, which will likely save you hundreds or thousands of dollars each year. Not to mention, medical dispensary products are typically cheaper than recreational products as it is.

Higher Possession Limits

Each state has set limits for possession of cannabis. However, the limits are different if your marijuana is for medical purposes. In recreational states, the medical cannabis possession limits will be higher than that of recreational cannabis.

The difference typically varies by about an ounce of cannabis or more, which is a considerable amount. This is important because not everyone lives down the street from a dispensary. People like to stock up, and higher possession limits allow medical users to do just that legally.

Legal Protection

Cannabis is still considered a schedule I controlled substance according to the federal government. However, it is up to states most of the time to prosecute marijuana users. States also have the option to safeguard medical users.

There is a bit of gray area when it comes to the legality of cannabis, but having a medical marijuana card means that a licensed professional has recommended marijuana to you. Having your medical card will never hurt you in a legal situation; it will only help.

Higher Growing Limits

Many states with medical and recreational programs allow patients or caregivers to grow their own supply of cannabis. At the moment, West Virginia does not allow this, but eventually, lawmakers will have no choice but to pass legislation allowing home cultivation.

Growing your own cannabis is an amazing thing. You know exactly where your medicine is coming from, and it’s fun! Watching your plant grow, the process of trimming and processing the buds, and consuming them is a fulfilling experience.

Not to mention, growing your own supply will save you a considerable amount of money. Imagine never having to go to the dispensary again! In states with recreational marijuana, the growing limits for medical users is higher.

For example, Colorado, a recreational state, allows users to grow up to 6 plants at their home. However, Colorado residents with their medical card may grow up to 99 plants!

Higher Potency Limits

Most states enforce potency limits in their marijuana for both medical and recreational users. This means there are limits on the percentage or amount of THC in any given product sold at a dispensary.

The potency limits at medical dispensaries are higher than the potency at recreational dispensaries. Recreational users will not have access to medical dispensaries.
