How to Make Your Own Cannabis Concentrates

Updated: Nov 1, 2023

With medical marijuana being a relatively new phenomena in West Virginia, patients looking for high quality concentrates will find dispensary shelves lacking.

If you do manage to find some concentrates, they likely won’t be there the next time you make a trip to the dispensary, and for the price, it’s hard to justify dispensary grade concentrates in West Virginia right now.

This will get better as more cultivators come online, but for patients looking for high quality concentrates on a consistent basis, there are some alternative options that might give you better quality and a slightly lower price, at the cost of just a little bit of effort.

Making your own cannabis concentrates is simple and easy and only requires a few extra tools, a little bit of time, and a lot of practice.

In this article, we’ll cover everything you need to know about making your own concentrates in West Virginia!

Make Your Own Cannabis Concentrates – The Easy Way

How Hard is it to Make Your Own Concentrates?

Depending on the approach you take, making your own concentrates can be as simple or as difficult as you want it to be.

From oven-baked cannabutter to complex closed-loop extraction systems for creating solvent-based concentrates, there’s space for everyone and every budget.

Though, it goes without saying that it’s best to leave anything involving flammable procedures or specially processed chemicals to the experts and stick to the beginner methods for patients new to making concentrates.

Fortunately, since concentrates are simply extracted parts of the cannabis plant, there are more than a handful of ways to make your own concentrates at home, and a few methods require inexpensive and simple materials.

Different Types of Concentrates & The Difficulty Required to Make Them

There are levels with cannabis concentrates ranging from very easy with little experience required to highly technical and advanced techniques requiring precise (and expensive) equipment.

There are several different types of cannabis concentrates, and even more types of consistencies you can get from them too. Wax, budder, shatter, diamonds, sauce, and distillate are all different consistencies, and they can be manufactured in different ways too.

Here’s a list of a few different types of concentrates and how difficult it is to produce them:

Solvent-based concentrates – Difficult, typically requiring expensive equipment and technical knowledge.

Solventless concentrates – Easy to difficult, can be made at home relatively easily, higher quality concentrates require additional equipment.

Kief – Extremely Easy, and no tools or extra work required.

Bubble Hash/Water Hash – Easy to Medium, requires a lot of work but few tools are required.

Solvent-based concentrates are typically off limits, though cannabutter and Rick Simpson Oil get a pass for being a little easier to make at home.

Solventless concentrates can range in difficulty, with some techniques being simple to perform at home while other techniques may require extensive knowledge and specialized equipment. Some of the best concentrates in the world are made using simple methods like heat-presses or bubble hash, and technique often plays a bigger role than equipment.

Two Ways to Make Concentrates at Home

How to Make Bubble Hash or Water Hash at Home

Bubble hash leaves a crumble-like substance after producing it, offering notably more flavor and strength than kief.

There’s no chemicals or flammable materials used to make it, and the process for making bubble hash is simple (though tedious).

Bubble hash is made by mixing ice, water, and dried cannabis in buckets with micron bags that filter and catch the trichomes that fall off the cannabis during agitation.

To make bubble hash, you’ll need to pick up a few extra items such as a specialized bubble hash bucket system and filters, ice, and water.

Kits will come with instructions, but all that’s required is to mix the cannabis, ice, and water, and agitate over a period of time until material begins to collect at the bottom. Using this technique with different filters will eventually leave you with a crumbly, flavorful batch of hash that costs very little to make and offers incredible results.

Press Your Own Rosin – Best Method for Quality

If the messy and time-consuming process of mixing dried cannabis with water in buckets sounds too excessive, hands-down the best method for making concentrates whether at home or in a professional lab is by using a heat press.

The best concentrates in the world are made using heat presses, and it’s one of the fastest and most effective ways to produce them.

Solventless concentrates can be made by pressing dried cannabis with extraordinary pressure and a little bit of heat, which squeezes the trichomes off the plant into a gooey liquid construction.

This goo is typically pressed onto parchment paper and dried and stores before it’s ready for consumption.

There are a variety of heat presses available at different price points, with different levels of experience required to operate from beginner to expert. There are also a million different techniques for pressing your own concentrates, with different techniques yielding different compositions such as crumble, budder, or wax.

To press your own concentrates, you’ll need to pick up at least a heat press, paper, and multi-size micron bags, though there are many different accessories available for making the process more convenient or thorough.

Pressing your own concentrates is a fun way to get a little extra out of your experience as a medical marijuana patient, and if you catch a good deal on cannabis flower, it may even be cheaper than buying concentrates at a dispensary!
