Smoke Too Much Weed? How to Calm Down if You Get Too High

West Virginia has a comprehensive medical marijuana program, offering many different cannabis products to patients approved for a medical marijuana certification.

Whether you’re a new patient or a veteran cannabis enthusiast, if you’ve ever consumed too much cannabis you know the anxiety and uncomfortable feelings that can occur.

In this article, we’ll cover what you need to do if you get too high, how to calm down from being too high, and how to make an uncomfortable experience with cannabis a little less intense.

What to Do When You Get Too High

First, Try to Relax, & Remember These Feelings Will Go Away

It can be a little difficult to calm down if you’ve become agitated or worked up from being too high.

We’ve all gone a little overboard with cannabis and it’s not usually on purpose that we end up uncomfortably stoned.

The simple truth is that it really isn’t being too high that’s causing discomfort, but it’s likely unfamiliarity, hyperawareness, or novel thoughts or feelings that are causing discomfort.

Try to take in the moment from outside these thoughts or feelings if possible, and remember that no one stays stoned forever. You’ll start to feel less uncomfortable after a little while.

Water, Snacks, & Blankets Are a Lifesaver if You’re Too High

It can’t be overstated how much water, snacks, and blankets matter when you’re too high. A soft, warm blanket is the perfect companion when you’re a little too baked.

It’s important to stay hydrated in general, but especially if you’ve overconsumed cannabis.

You’ll probably have a dry mouth and maybe a little itchiness in your throat if you’ve been smoking, so keep a bottle of water handy when you’re getting high.

Snacks are another important piece of calming down when you’re too high, believe it or not. Aside from having the munchies, snacks are a great way to reconnect your brain to something physical and positive and away from any uncomfortable thoughts or feelings.

Easy snacks, like popcorn, chips, or ice cream, taste unbelievably good when you’re high, and if you’re extremely high, they taste even better. Dialing in to just how good they taste might help you tune in to something more pleasant while you’re too high, which is a good thing.

If you happen to have some CBD on hand, you might consider taking some. CBD may help ease some of the more aggressive effects of THC, which could help you take it down a few notches.

How to Calm Anxiety When You’re Too High

Get Distracted by Something Fun & Creative

Being too high might put you in a position of overthinking, overanalyzing, or just reading too deep into things that ultimately don’t matter.

For this kind of anxiety when you’re too stoned, it’s best to find a positive and fun activity that can help distract your thoughts from running wild on you.

Puzzles, video games, drawing, music, reading, and movies are all great ways to get your brain excited and creative while you’re stoned. Try to avoid things like social media, politics, and the news, focusing on things that are personal and present you an opportunity to flex your creativity.

What to Avoid if You’re Too High

While there are certainly things you can do to calm down from being too high, there are also some things you might try to avoid if you’re too stoned and having a little trouble navigating the space.

Try to avoid overly judgmental people, large crowds, caffeine, scary movies, stressful situations, and obviously, using more cannabis.

These are somewhat random and fairly subjective, but you’ll find it’s probably best to deal with that pressing issue later, answer that phone call some other time, and maybe leave the coffee for later.

Stimulants like caffeine and sugar, overly exciting environments, and relationships that cause extra tension all can contribute to overthinking or heavy emotions, which will probably be more uncomfortable when you’re too high.

Best Ways to Calm Down When You Get Too High

Breathing exercises, yoga, and meditation can be incredibly useful if you’re feeling extra anxious or uncomfortable.

Focusing on your breath is a great way to bring yourself into a new headspace and reset your areas of tension. Try to find a more relaxing sitting position, take deep breaths, and relax your shoulders.

Getting too high can sometimes point out our flaws, issues, and physical problems in a way we haven’t had perspective on before, sometimes in an aggressive way.

Your body and mind speaks to you in a new way, giving you things to pay attention to that perhaps you’ve been subconsciously avoiding or putting off for too long.

Try to see these points of action as what they are; opportunities to make some changes.

While those changes don’t have to happen right this second, it’s important to be aware of problems and areas of life that may have been overlooked. While it might be uncomfortable to be presented with them in such an extreme way, it’s often for the best.

Spend some time trying to find a way to be okay with heightened awareness, overly excited emotions, or scattered thoughts, because in many cases, they are great opportunities to improve your life. Cannabis may be trying to help you along that path!
