West Virginia Residents Thrilled About Cannabis— New Patients Signing Up for Medical Marijuana Cards

Wave of New Patients Signing Up for Medical Marijuana Cards in West Virginia

Although West Virginia passed its medical marijuana program in 2017, the state has been slow to get dispensaries online and products available.

That’s expected to change before the end of 2021, with dispensaries projected to come online sometime between the middle of November and the end of December.

With the upcoming grand opening of West Virginia’s first dispensary, thousands of new patients have been registering for West Virginia medical marijuana cards and the state is approving them as fast as it can!

West Virginia Sees Thousands of New Patients Registering for Medical Marijuana Cards

West Virginia passed the Medical Cannabis Act on April 19th, 2017 (just one day short of 4-20).

The law made West Virginia the 29th state to pass a medical marijuana program, and patients have been waiting for the official rollout since then.

Now, in 2021, dispensaries are expected to come online, and medical marijuana products should be available soon, leading many new patients to register for their medical marijuana cards as fast as they can to make sure they are legal and ready when products hit the shelves!

With dispensaries coming online soon, the state has been trying to pave the way for residents to register for medical marijuana cards before facilities are operational, hoping to prevent a bottleneck of applicants waiting to be approved.

Representatives from the state’s Office of Medical Cannabis were at the city county building in Wheeling, WV in October, offering sign-up events for people unable to file online.

Over 4,000 Patients Registered for Medical Marijuana Cards in West Virginia

With dispensaries opening just around the corner, many patients have started to apply online for West Virginia medical marijuana cards.

When troves of patients begin registering, it’s easy for the state to get a little backed up, but so far we’ve seen a fairly smooth transition in application time to application approval.

In West Virginia, telemedicine is approved for medical marijuana cards, so you can easily book your appointment with a physician online and register for a medical marijuana card from the comfort of your own home.

The state is also supporting many applicants who are unable to apply online, offering in-person services to help new applicants register with the state for their medical marijuana card.

Often states can be somewhat restrictive towards chronic and terminally ill patients, keeping telemedicine off the table and making applications overly complicated. West Virginia has taken the exact opposite approach, offering both online as well as in-person applications with the expectation to provide medical marijuana cards to every resident who qualifies for them.

Alongside the in person sign-up events, the Office of Medical Cannabis lists the requirements for obtaining registration in person, with a few required documents and associated fees for doing so through their service.
