West Virginia’s medical marijuana program gives access to a variety of legal cannabis products for patients with qualifying conditions to use in any way they see fit.
Once you’ve received your certification, you’ll be looking to try different medical marijuana products that can help with your condition or symptoms. Your first trip to the dispensary will come shortly before you look to dose cannabis for the first time, and there are some ways to help you figure out how to find the right dose.
In this article, we’ll cover how to find the right dosage for cannabis products, how to use self-titration to get your minimum effective dosage, and how to use self-titration to keep your tolerance to THC at a manageable level!
How to Self-Titrate Cannabis to Find the Right Dose for You
What Is Self-Titration?
Self-titration is the act of slowly increasing dosage size to find the optimal dosage.
Medical marijuana patients use self-titration to find the minimum effective dose, or the lowest dosage that provides the best relief.
Finding the right minimum effective dose is important with cannabis, because it’s the only way to measure precisely what level of effects you’ll experience. It’s also the only way to determine the most sustainable dosage.
Since your tolerance increases with cannabis use, the same dosage won’t always be the required dosage. Starting out at too high of a dose could not only cause unwanted psychoactive effects, but it could cause your tolerance to spike to an unnecessary level with long-term use.
Self-titration is a way to slowly increase your dosage to a level that is appropriate for getting relief while maintaining your tolerance as best as possible for long-term sustainability.
What Are the Benefits of Self-Titrating With Cannabis?
Self-titration not only gives you the appropriate dosage level, but it will also help you keep your tolerance at a manageable level.
Self-titrating can also keep you from experiencing the effects of over-consuming cannabis, which can include symptoms like sweating, nervousness, paranoia, and significant discomfort.
By determining the minimum dosage of cannabis that produces the desired level of effects, you can stay in a safe range for your tolerance while avoiding effects like sedation. Self-titration gives you the ability to find the dosage that can sustainably work for you which will be unique to you and your symptoms.
Your symptoms may require a large dose of cannabis, in which you’ll be looking to maximize the potency of cannabis while trying to avoid overconsumption. Or perhaps, your symptoms are not debilitating and you’re looking to micro-dose cannabis for minimal psychoactive effects.
Self-titration can work for any patient with any symptoms in any circumstances, and it’s likely the best way to keep you from getting too high along the way.

How Do I Self-Titrate With Cannabis?
Self-titrating with cannabis can be a little tricky in the beginning, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the downsides.
To successfully self-titrate with cannabis, you’ll first need to identify the lowest possible dosage of the product that you’ll be trying.
For cannabis flower or vaporizers that might be one puff, for concentrates or edibles it might be 0.01 grams, and for oral products like THC pills it might be one pill.
Your tolerance might play a role in self-titration if you’ve been using cannabis for a while, and for patients who have already built a tolerance to cannabis in some capacity, start with the lowest known dosage that produces effects.
Once you’ve found the lowest possible dosage, you’ll want to start there and wait at least until effects have completely worn off, though 24 hours is the typical window in self-titration.
You can keep track of your self-titration through a journal or with a medical marijuana treatment plan, which will be especially helpful depending on your dosage interval.
How to Know You’ve Found the Right Dose of Cannabis
After waiting for your first titrated dose to wear off, you’ll look to take another dose.
If the effects were not strong enough or you didn’t find that you experienced enough relief with the previous dose, increase your dosage by the smallest amount possible and repeat until you’ve landed at the right dose for you.
The right dosage will be unique to your symptoms, though most patients look for an effective dosage that provides solid relief with as limited psychoactive effects as possible.
If the psychoactive effects of cannabis are beneficial for your symptoms, your minimum effective dose might be at a higher level. Once you’ve reached a dosage that you’re comfortable with, you should be looking to maintain that dosage at whatever intervals you regularly medicate.
Finding your minimum effective dosage lets you medicate at regular intervals in a way that shouldn’t interfere with your daily activities or put you overboard, but dosages are as relative to products as they are to your biology.
1 gram of cannabis flower will not be equivalent to 1 gram of concentrates, and even strains can vary drastically in the amount of THC that is contained in them. Be sure to know your appropriate dosage levels of THC and CBD.
