What to Expect for Medical Marijuana in West Virginia in 2022

West Virginia’s medical marijuana program has officially kicked off with the first dispensary opening in Morgantown, and new stores and products slated to hit the shelves in 2022!

With rapid expansion of the medical marijuana program in West Virginia now on track, getting legal cannabis in West Virginia is gradually becoming a turnkey process.

And as with all new programs and products, things are set to change as well. Expansions and better access for patients to get their medicine are at the top of the priority list, and many are looking forward to the new year for West Virginia medical marijuana.

Let’s take a look at what’s next for medical marijuana in West Virginia!

You Can Finally Buy Medical Marijuana in West Virginia!

West Virginia became the 29th state to pass a medical marijuana program in 2017, and since then it’s been a long haul to get products on shelves and patients buying them.

In the last quarter of 2021, two new dispensaries have opened their doors, offering a variety of medical cannabis products.

Currently, these two stores are the only operational dispensaries available, with one dispensary in Morgantown, WV and one dispensary in Weston, WV.

Both dispensaries are operated by Trulieve, a large national company providing cannabis products to nearly 100 stores across the US.

In West Virginia dispensaries, you can find a variety of different medical cannabis products, with an expected rollout of new products to arrive soon.

What Medical Marijuana Products are Available in West Virginia Right Now?

Currently, there are several product options available at both West Virginia dispensaries, including cannabis flower and vape cartridges at both stores, while the Weston location being the only store with oral or capsuled product options.

*As with all new programs, dispensary inventories will change (likely daily), so while these options reflect the current inventory, that can, and will change at any moment. So if you’re looking for a specific product be sure to call ahead to the dispensary!

Because both store locations are brand new, products are also likely to sell out fast until more locations open or cultivation ramps up to meet the demand for customers.

As of right now you’ll see limited product options, but products are available.

Trulieve hosts many of their product options online, and it appears that topicals, tinctures, and concentrates will be available at some point in the near future.

The Future of West Virginia Medical Marijuana

West Virginia boasts a robust medical marijuana program, offering easy access for patients with many qualifying conditions that are approved for medical marijuana in West Virginia, as well as an expected large scale retail supply chain coming to the state soon.

It would be appropriate to assume that 2022 will be a booming year for West Virginia cannabis, with many more dispensaries coming online and new product types and options becoming available as cultivators get a handle on producing medical cannabis for the state.

As more dispensaries come online, cultivators will get a better handle on the volume they will need to be producing, creating smoother operations along the way, which should create a better pipeline for patients looking for a larger variety in products.

Could West Virginia Legalize Recreational Marijuana Soon?

Legalization is also a part of the equation, though many may be disappointed to hear that West Virginia doesn’t currently have any competent plans for legalizing recreational marijuana, the federal rescheduling of cannabis could very well happen in the next few years, or legislative sessions.

Recreational legalization is not a priority for the state of West Virginia right now, but getting a smoothly-operating and comprehensive medical marijuana program up and running is a priority for the Mountain State.

And that’s probably the right way to approach legalization as of right now, once the state has a fully operational medical marijuana program under the belt and all of the kinks are out of the works, West Virginia will have a much better grasp on what it will take to implement a recreational marijuana program in the state.

Medical Marijuana Remains Priority for West Virginia

As with other states who have legalized a medical marijuana program, there’s heightened pressure to pave the way for chronic and terminally ill patients to have access to the program, and making sure products are accessible to those patients.

It’s likely that 2022 will open many hearts and minds to cannabis as a medicine, and once the program is running like a clock, legislators may revisit any number of amendments to the program to increase access, decrease prices, or any other agendas that may come up.

For now, West Virginians can rest proudly knowing that the state has paved the way for one of the more accessible and compassionate medical marijuana programs in the Country.
