How Much Does Medical Marijuana Cost in West Virginia?

After getting approved for a medical marijuana card in West Virginia, patients have complete freedom to purchase up to a 30-day supply of cannabis, without any requirements on which products they can use. However, it can be difficult to budget your purchases, as the prices for cannabis products in West Virginia’s new market are still moving around quite a bit. With limited dispensaries currently operating, prices can vary from week to week, and from location to location.

In this article, we’ll cover what you can expect to pay, on average, for cannabis in West Virginia. We’ll also touch on cannabis supply shortages, and give you an overview of the medical cannabis market here in West Virginia.

Average Cost of Cannabis Products in West Virginia in 2022

What’s the Price of Cannabis Flower in West Virginia?

With limited cultivators and dispensaries up and running, the cannabis program seems to still be struggling to figure out how to align cannabis production with demand, as supply shortages are not uncommon.

With so few cultivators, and tens of thousands of patients wanting to purchase products, prices for cannabis flower in West Virginia are currently higher, on average, than States that have more established programs like Colorado or Washington.

The average price for regular grade cannabis flower is similar to the pricing for “top shelf” cannabis in recreational programs. You’ll typically find 1/8th jars (3.5 grams) for around $50 before tax.

There are deals and discounts sometimes available on lower-tier cannabis flower, such as Trulieve’s pre-ground 7-gram jars or their 3.5 gram “minis”.

What’s the Price of Cannabis Edibles in West Virginia?

Edibles are still essentially non-existent in West Virginia, though oral consumables have recently become available.

You can find capsules or THC pills at around $100 for a 30ct bottle, and distillate concentrates (which can be put into edibles) are around $70 per gram.

If you choose to purchase distillate to make your own edibles, the 1-gram distillate syringes currently contain around 850 mg of THC, though this will change depending on the product’s potency.

Edibles are hard to come by in West Virginia due to laws that prevent cannabis from being made into certain types of consumables. We’re hopeful that as the program expands, the regulations will be relaxed and processors will be given the freedom to develop more palatable edibles for oral consumption.

What’s the Price of Cannabis Concentrates in West Virginia?

The availability of concentrates is significantly greater than that for edibles, and you can even use concentrates to make your own edibles in West Virginia.

Currently, the price for concentrates ranges from $40/.5 gram - $100/gram.

Concentrates that are pre-packaged into vape cartridges are more expensive and typically average between $40 - $45 per half gram, and occasionally you can find a 1-gram cartridge from the Seed & Strain brand for around $85.

Traditional concentrates like live budder or live resin are available for around $65 per gram, though there are limited quantities available, and they’ve mostly been from Trulieve dispensaries.

Distillate is also available, and it averages around $70 per gram and isn’t commonly found in half-gram quantities.

When Will Cannabis Supply Go Up and Will Prices for Cannabis Go Down in West Virginia?

High Prices for Cannabis Products Likely Here to Stay

One of the drawbacks to a smaller medical marijuana program is the monopolization of cannabis cultivation. It takes a lot of cultivators to produce affordable cannabis, and it takes even more cultivators to produce large enough quantities of affordable cannabis to keep the market price down.

West Virginia simply doesn’t have very many operational cultivators, and as a result, prices will likely remain where they currently are for the near future. With that in mind, we recommend that you sign up for our newsletter, as well as the newsletters from dispensaries, so you can keep an eye out for deals and discounts when they become available.

Will West Virginia’s Cannabis Flower Supply Increase in 2022?

The supply for cannabis flower is still low because the limited number of cultivators that are currently operating in West Virginia have only managed to get in front of a few harvests.

Once the supply process is tightened up and harvests can overlap, supply will likely increase in the short-term, though any significant increase in medical marijuana patient registrations could cause supply to become limited again.

The critical component for keeping supply on hand at dispensaries is having enough plants per harvest to accommodate for the expected number of patients who will be purchasing cannabis.

This can be a very tricky thing to manage when there are limited cultivators and a growing number of patients registering for medical marijuana, especially when the program is still in its early stages.

For now, price will probably stay where it’s at and supply will be slightly harder to come by, though in the coming months when cultivators have settled into a solid harvesting schedule, there should be more product availability.
