Is There a Difference in Cannabis Highs? Edibles, Concentrates, & Cannabis Flower

Updated: Nov 1, 2023

Patients are registering for West Virginia’s medical marijuana program faster than ever, and each month dispensaries are stocking new cannabis inventory.

With new patients approaching cannabis for the first time, one of the biggest questions that can arise is if it’s true that different cannabis products can give you different “highs”.

Being high from cannabis will affect everyone differently, and each person will have an experience that is unique to them when it comes to cannabis.

Not only will each person have a slightly different experience with being high from cannabis, but different products such as indicas or sativas will cause different types of cannabis highs too. In addition to the type of high, the strength of the plant’s terpenes and THC will cause the high from cannabis to be different too, and different products have different potencies.

In this article, we’ll discover how the different types of cannabis products can make a difference in the high that you experience, how altered potencies will change the strength of the high, and how people perceive the high from cannabis differently.

Cannabis Products & How They Cause a Different High

Cannabis Flower – The Best All-Around Approach

Cannabis flower offers a timeless way to experience the high from cannabis with dosages that are easy to measure and natural ingredients, cannabis flower can offer a lot to both beginner and experienced patients.

Cannabis flower can range in THC content, and the more THC you have, the more potent the high will be.

Cannabis flower can come with any range of terpenes, too, which will heavily affect the flower’s taste, smell, and effects.

Since cannabis can be grown as an indica, sativa, or hybrid, the combination of strains and unique effects and properties are limitless, and every day cultivators are breeding new combinations of plants that offer a one-off experience.

The high from cannabis flower is typically calmer than some cannabis products such as concentrates or edibles, offering a high that usually lasts somewhere between 30 minutes to 3 hours depending on your tolerance.

The effects can vary based on independent factors such as the strain itself, your biology, your mental state, and emotional state, though the high from cannabis flower is enjoyed throughout the world and is appreciated for its easy-to-handle experience and variety of highs.

Edibles Offer a Longer-Lasting, More Potent High Than Cannabis Flower

Edibles are a few steps above cannabis flower, traditionally offering a longer high that is considerably more potent, even at low doses of THC.

Edibles are processed in your body differently than other consumption methods because when you consume edibles the THC is transported to your liver where it is processed. The liver creates a new metabolite when it encounters THC called 11-hydroxy-THC that is considerably stronger than conventional THC.

This is likely a big part of why cannabis is so much stronger when it’s consumed as an edible, because the new metabolite increases the potency and duration of the high, which can last anywhere from 3 to 9 or more hours.

The high itself does feel different than the high from cannabis flower, and most patients report a heavy, headier type of high with edibles, though physical effects from edibles can be extreme as well.

Patients who over consume edibles can experience very strong effects from edibles, much more intense than cannabis flower. Some people even consider high doses of edible THC to be nearly equivalent to minor psychedelics, though the experience itself is differentiated in several ways.

Low-dose edibles are great for patients experiencing chronic pain, and large-dose edibles can do wonders for patients with a high tolerance to THC looking for powerful relief.

Concentrates Are the Strongest Type of Cannabis Product

Concentrates are extracts from the cannabis plant that are typically vaporized, offering extraordinarily high levels of THC and potent effects.

Concentrates are loved by patients with high tolerances who need relief immediately because they can deliver an extremely potent dose of THC with instantaneous effects.

Cannabis concentrates range in THC content, though you’ll commonly find them between 60% - 99% THC, making them the most powerful cannabis product in the marijuana arsenal. The high from concentrates can last anywhere from 3 to 5 hours, though your tolerance will play a large role in how long they last.

The high from concentrates is considered somewhat “floaty” or “airy”, as opposed to cannabis flower, which presents a thicker kind of high. The high from concentrates is often described as uplifting and enthralling, and understandably, considering the levels of THC that are involved.

Products like RSO take the best of both worlds when it comes to edibles and concentrates, packing a large number of cannabinoids and heavy THC content into a single product. These types of products are often favored by patients with severe conditions or symptoms such as seizures, HIV/AIDS, and cancer, because of their powerful and enduring effects.
